PeeWee Team Wins Winter Classic Cup Championship

December 29, 2017

The Pee Wee Ice Eagles won the TCS Hockey Winter Classic Cup in the Pee Wee A Division.  The tournament was held prior to Christmas in the Rockford/Belvidere, Illinois area and features an outdoor rink at Riverside Ice Arena at Doty Park in Belvidere.  The PW Ice Eagles opened the tournament at the outdoor rink with a 9-0 victory over the Arizona Hockey Union out of Phoenix.  The Arizona team kept the game in check early as the score was 1-0 after one period.  However, three goals in the second period, with a couple coming late, lead to a third period route.  The second game at the BMO Center, home to the Rockford Ice Hogs, was very competitive between the Ice Eagles and the Indy Jr. Fuel from Indianapolis.  After the Ice Eagles pushed out to a 5-2 lead they held on for a 5-3 win.  The third game saw the Ice Eagles explode for a 14-1 win over the Pekin Dragons.

The championship game, back at the outdoor rink at Doty Park, featured a rematch with the Ice Eagles and Indy Jr Fuel.  The Pee Wee Ice Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and they held on for a 4-0 victory to secure the tournament championship.

The Bantam and Squirt travel teams also participated at the Winter Classic tournament.  The Bantam team qualified to play in the ‘B’ championship game.
